USMC-RTMC Strategic Partnership:
A Foundation for Indo-Pacific Security

The enduring strategic partnership between the United States Marine Corps (USMC) and the Royal Thai Marine Corps (RTMC), facilitated by the Joint U.S. Military Advisory Group Thailand (JUSMAGTHAI), underscores decades of collaborative defense efforts. Established in 1956, JUSMAGTHAI has been instrumental in enhancing Thailand’s defense capabilities and fostering robust joint military relations.

Evolution of a Robust Alliance

The bilateral amphibious exercise in 1962 marked the genesis of this strong alliance. This foundational cooperation culminated in the inception of COBRA GOLD in 1982. Now the Indo-Pacific’s premier multinational exercise, COBRA GOLD symbolizes deep interoperability and a mutual commitment to regional stability, crisis response, and humanitarian operations.

Capability Development and Modernization

Through JUSMAGTHAI, the USMC actively leads joint training and exercises with the RTMC. These initiatives are designed to support capability development and modernization, with a particular focus on amphibious operations, maritime security, and disaster relief preparedness. This continuous engagement ensures both forces remain highly interoperable and agile.

Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) Initiatives

Beyond traditional military cooperation, the USMC significantly contributes to Thailand’s broader  Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) efforts. A notable achievement was the 2025 assistance provided by MARFORPAC Marines to the Royal Thai Armed Forces (RTArF) in establishing a new Center of Excellence for Humanitarian Demining. This landmark initiative bolsters Thailand’s capacity for unexploded ordnance (UXO) clearance and strengthens civil-military response mechanisms.

These sustained collaborative efforts ensure both the USMC and RTMC are well-prepared to address the evolving security challenges across the Indo-Pacific region, maintaining alignment and readiness.
